CRUSH Colorectal Cancer 5K 2017

Bum-ble-B's

As you know, on January 31, 2014, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer. To best describe where I was and where I am now, I will use the words from a song by Danny Gokey, Tell Your Heart to Beat Again.

The day I found out the devastating news, I was shattered. My world fell apart and life as I knew it forever changed:

You're shattered
Like you've never been before
The life you knew
In a thousand pieces on the floor
And words fall short in times like these
When this world drives you to your knees
You think you're never gonna get back
To the you that used to be

Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday's a closing door
You don't live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you've been
And tell your heart to beat again

Over the past couple of years, my faith has been tested. Old Friendships have been rekindled and friendships have been strengthened. I have also made some lifelong friends throughout my journey. I have a new perspective on life and am forever changed.

People have said that I am tough. There have been many days when I would disagree. See, I feel like I had to start my life over. It is what I refer to as 'my new normal'. I have been hesitant to do things for fear of having issues. (Those who are close to me know what I am referring to.)

Beginning
Just let that word wash over you
It's alright now
Love's healing hands have pulled you through
So get back up, take step one
Leave the darkness, feel the sun
'Cause your story's far from over
And your journey's just begun

Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday's a closing door
You don't live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you've been
And tell your heart to beat again

I see the scars on my body every day. Those scars remind me of where I've been and what I've been through. God carried me and my family through the most difficult time in our lives. He gave me a second chance at life. While I may never understand why I had to go through such a trying time, I am a better person because of it. I am stronger than ever and realize it is time for my heart to beat again.

Let every heartbreak
And every scar
Be a picture that reminds you
Who has carried you this far
'Cause love sees farther than you ever could
In this moment heaven's working
Everything for your good

Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday's a closing door
You don't live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you've been
And tell your heart to beat again
Your heart to beat again
Beat again

Colorectal cancer is the second deadliest cancer in the United States. It has affected my life in ways I never imagined. Just as the chorus to this song says:

Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday's a closing door
You don't live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you've been
And tell your heart to beat again

I want to give back to others who are dealing with this deadly disease. I want to help improve patients' quality of life and to find a cure for this disease.

I ask that you find it in your heart to donate to this cause. No amount is too small. Take it from me, I know what it is like to go day after day for radiation therapy. I know what it is like to undergo chemo. I know what it is like to watch your body dwindle down to nothing but skin and bones. I beat the odds. Some people are not so lucky. Let's help find a cure for this disease. Will you donate today?

Remember, No One FIGHTS Alone!

Always,
-Angela
