Rik's High Rollers - Betting on a Cure
For the second year my family, friends, and I will be walking in the Duke CRUSH Colorectal Cancer Walk to raise funds and awareness of the incredible work being done at Duke.
For those who don't know me.....I am a big, tough, loud guy who loves life and fiercely defends my friends and family. Those who do know me, also know I am a softy at heart.
Spring 2014, I started not feeling well and most of all not having an appetite which is not like me at all. On May 1st 2014, I left the office not feeling well and by the time my wife got home I was in extreme pain. She took me to the local emergency room. Within hours, they told me they believed I had colon cancer that had spread to my liver. Over the next days my diagnosis was confirmed first at UNC Hospital because my daughter bullied me into transfering to a cancer center. Within days, following a second opinion after being bullied by my sister, I became a patient at Duke Cancer Center and began my latest battle. I have been diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Adenocarcinoma Colon Cancer. I have been enrolled in a clinical trial for almost 3 years. I am hopeful we can slow or stop the disease progression. Along the journey, My friends and family help keep me focused on what life is all about.
