Running for Lucy!
If you're on this page, you most likely knew Mrs. Shockley and knew how wonderful and generous she was. To honor her and raise money for cancer research at Duke, I'm running in the Duke Colorectal Cancer 5k again this year with her friends and family. You probably get the gist and are on this page for a reason anyway, so to spice it up a little bit, I'll put a few fun memories I have of Mrs. S in the hopes that it'll convince you to donate if you haven't already:
1. Mrs. S gave me a United States placemat since she knew that even as an adult, I still somehow have trouble recalling the geography of our country. Any time someone eats at my house, I get to tell them about who got it for me!
2. I love sea turtles, and just as a random gift, Mrs. Shockley got me a set of blank cards with different types of turtles on them. I have one left, and the second-to-last one went to my favorite author, so whoever receives the last one should feel honored! (If you donate a lot of money, that might be you, wink wink nudge nudge).
3. When moving to Durham, I was having a lot of trouble finding housing and knowing where to look. Mrs. S got me a little booklet about Durham to try and help me learn about the area. I still have bookmarks in it to this day even though I know Durham now.
4. The Shockleys are notorious for their sophisticated and delicious desserts, yet one Fourth of July I dared to bake cupcakes for them. They weren't anything special, just a little food coloring involved, but Mrs. Shockley made me feel like they were really tasty and worthy of the Shockley household, even a treat for them. And that about sums up Lucy.
If after those stories you aren't convinced, head on over to my other teammates' pages and hopefully you will be. Thanks in advance for anything you can give, the patients in the Duke Cancer Institute, as well as myself, appreciate it!
