Mike Confer's Friends

Mike Confer joined Whiting-Turner in 1970 after graduating from Lehigh University with  a degree in Civil Engineering. He began his career with WT in the bridge group, which was a very active and productive part of the company at that time.  Mike thoroughly enjoyed heavy and highway work and excelled at it.  He was promoted to project manager in 1974 and in 1983 Vice President. 

About that time the bottom fell out of the bridge work, and Mike was instrumental in starting the retail group, taking on the 100 million dollar renovation and expansion of Tysons Corner shopping Mall in northern Va.This project became the spring board for Whiting-Turner's reputation as the nation's best and largest retail builder with clients such as JC Penney, Target, Sears, Rouse & Co. Glimcher Development, Westfields, Mills Corporation and many more throughout the country.

 In 1998 he was promoted to Senior Vice President, and oversaw the 7 Southeast branch offices, including Ft.Lauderdale,Orlando,Tampa,Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh and several groups in Baltimore.

 In April of 2005 he began a 19 month battle with brain cancer.  He lost that battle in December of 2006. 

 In April of 2006 we participated in our first Angels Among Us walk.  Mike walked with us, and he named the team.  We have continued to walk each year in his honor.  This marks our 7th year.  Mike Confer was an ordinary hero.  He touched many in his too short life here.
