This year I have chosen to participate again in the Angels Among Us 5K in support of my strong, beautiful, wise, intelligent, and brave mother, who is faught a year long fight with a very angry glioblastoma. This event helps raise money for research purposes for the Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke Hospital.
Judy was diagnosed with a stage 2 glioblastoma about the size of a baseball in April of 2016 after a year or two of slowly developing memory loss. It was a miracle that memory loss was the only symptom! She fought hard while enduring 6 straight weeks of both chemo and radiation that ended just before her daughter Suzanna's wedding in the beginning of July 2016.
After another brain scan in July 2016, we found Judy's tumor had not shrunk or grown any and we decided to move forward with a stronger chemo treatment. A few weeks and another scan later, we learn the stronger chemo has also had no affect on her tumor so it was then we decided with the doctors to try an IV drug that assists the effectiveness of the chemo.
About a month and a half passes, it is now two days before Thanksgiving and the newest brain scan showed growth despite all of our efforts and dead tissue in the center of the tumor. At this time we were given a timeline of around 4-6 months left with my precious mom. It was at this time we chose to discontinue treatment and begin home hospice care so we could enjoy the time we had left with her.
On April 8th, 2017 my mom lost her earthly battle with cancer and went to be with her Heavenly Father.
I have created the team Judy's Army to run in support and memory of my mom. Please join my team and run/walk with me if you can! If you can't, I ask you to please consider donating to help further brain tumor research at this amazing hospital. My goal is $500 by April 28th the morning of the run.
Any donation helps! :) I look forward to seeing you there!
