7th Annual Tri For Mom
Even though I was down for a month after my appendectomy, I am not going to miss my annual triathlon in honor of mom! I have slowly been building back up and should be good to go. :-)
Mom’s brain tumor is still stable, which is great. However, the chemotherapy was keeping her blood counts too low and she was not able to get the proper dosages, so she has stopped chemotherapy. She is now on a biweekly Avastin treatment which should stop the blood flow to her tumor. A good analogy her neuro-oncologist gave us was that if the tumors are weeds, chemo is the roundup and the Avastin is just not watering the weed.
Mom has had a rough couple weeks, but we got confirmation from her doctor that he new treatment is working like it should and shrinking the tumors. Even with everything that is going on, she is a trooper and staying positive as usual! She loves spoiling and playing with her two little granddaughters.
I am going to do the same race as last year, the Buchanan Triathlon in Mom's hometown. It is not your traditional triathlon. It is a 2-mile run, 13-mile bike, and 5-mile kayak. It was a great time last year and I am looking forward to it this year! Join me (http://www.muddysquirrel.com/buchanan-tri.html) if you wish! :-)
I am raising money for The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke. This is where Mom has been treated since diagnosed with brain cancer in 2009. Every year we go down for their big event called Angels Among Us, which is always so amazing and empowering.
The funds raised at this event will support cutting-edge brain tumor research. At Duke, ground-breaking lab research is translated into treatments for patients more quickly than anywhere else. Your gift will give Duke's investigators the resources needed to push their research efforts at a much faster rate. There was a great segment on 60 minutes about Duke's research: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/promising-duke-university-polio-brain-cancer-trial-given-breakthrough-status-60-minutes/
I am asking you to help by supporting my fundraising efforts with a donation. Your tax-deductible gift will make a difference in the lives of many!
If you would prefer, you can also mail your tax-deductible contribution with my name in the memo to the following address:

I greatly appreciate your support!
