RICHARD’S 5K FUN RUN/WALK TO TAKE RUNNERS THROUGH DRAMATIC MOUNTAIN COURSE
Third Annual Run and Silent Auction To Raise Funds In the Fight Against Brain Cancer
Maggie Valley, N.C. – Runners, walkers, and folks cheering from the sidelines will enjoy one of the most beautiful and challenging 5K runs ever at the third annual Richard’s 5K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, August 6.
The run and walk, starting at 10 am, will take participants across mile-high meadows and along forest trails at Cataloochee Guest Ranch in Maggie Valley. The self-timed run crosses the ranch grounds at an elevation of 5,200 feet near the border of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, with Hemphill Bald as a dramatic backdrop. Afterwards, lunch will be available for purchase at a cook-out behind the main Ranch house.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Duke University's Tisch Brain Tumor Center. Register for the run/walk at www.richardsrun.org. The fee is $10 in advance and $15 the day of the race. Participants should plan to arrive by 9 am to allow time for parking and check-in.
You can still be part of the fun even if you can’t make the Run. Cataloochee is also hosting a silent auction at www.richardsrun.org/auction. View and bid on trips, art, fine dining and more. Some auction highlights include:
* An alligator hunt in Louisiana, including a two-night stay for two people, meals, and a fishing trip or Eco Tour for two
* A weekend getaway for two at Cataloochee Guest Ranch.
* Two all access season passes to Cataloochee Ski Area.
* Original fine art, photography and sculpture by local artists.
Cataloochee Ranch hosts Richard’s Run each year in memory of Maggie Valley resident Richard Coker, who lost his hard-fought battle with brain cancer in 2013. He was 55, the grandson of Cataloochee Ranch founders "Mr. Tom" and "Miss Judy" Alexander, and an active member of the present-day Ranch family.
“We’ve donated $12,000 from past races to the Tisch Center and hope to raise even more this year,” says Mary Coker, Richard’s sister and general manager of Cataloochee Ranch. “We’ve got a spectacular setting for the runners and walkers, and a great way to spend the morning.”
Donations, race-day volunteers and individual runners in all age groups are welcome. Check out www.richardsrun.org for more on sponsorship, volunteering and donating to the event. Help us give brain cancer a heart-pounding run for its money!
