Randy Wilson
Randy Wilson

In honor of Randy Wilson; A Survivor!

Most people know Randy as the fun, carefree, purple & gold bleeding Pirate. He's the friend you call when you need an ear, who will give you the best advice, and who isn't afraid to make himself look silly in order to make other people laugh. I believe it's his positivity & carefree nature, that gave him the strength he needed to survive his brain tumor 16 years ago, that and a great support system of a loving family and lifetime friends. Although I didn't know him at the time, people close to him have told me that upon hearing the diagnosis, he said they had "one day to be upset, but after that it's time to fight it", and he did just that. He fought and he survived.

He said he always intended to take part in the Angels Among Us Run, but had always put it off for one reason or another. Five years ago, on May 9th 2016, Randy suffered a stroke at the age of 40 and once again found himself traveling back and forth to the amazing doctors at Duke for treatment/close monitoring. Once again, with a bit of luck, the support of family and friends, and his strong will to survive, Randy beat the odds again and made a swift recovery. The following year, he finally ran in his first Angels Among Us 5k and other than the year of COVID, has run in it every year thereafter.

Randy is a great friend to all, a devout ECU Pirate, a loving son, brother and uncle, and most importantly, he's a survivor! Here's to another 16 years and hopefully many more after that!
