Sarah Maulden Morton

In Memory of Sarah Maulden Morton
August 8, 1970 - March 1, 2004

Sarah was diagnosed with an Astrocytoma on March 4, 2002. All our lives changed forever after this. We thought she was doing well, but in August of the same year, she was diagnosed with another astrocytoma. Who would know that she would be struck again February 2003? But she was. After two biopsies, two surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation, we thought for sure this was all one person could handle but...

Sarah was a second grade teacher for ten years. During this time, she had two daughters of her own, Caroline, 6, and Emma, 2. These girls were her life and even during her illness, her children remained her top priority. Sarah did question why the Lord would allow her to be sick when she had two small children to raise. No one could answer her question; We all just tried to trust in the Lord.

At the end of January 2004, Sarah began to fail again and this time it was with a vengeance. She was diagnosed with a tumor on her brain stem. She fought this battle courageously but it was not meant to be. The Lord took her home in the early hours of March 1, 2004.

Sarah touched so many lives- her family, her students, her church family, her friends, her doctors, and the list goes on.

Our family wishes to thank Bruce Kihlstrom, M.D., everyone at The Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Home Health, Hospice, and the Angels Among Us team. Sarah participated in Angels Among Us last year as captain of "Team Morton" and had planned on doing so this year as well as join the committee. Our family is so very pleased and honored that this year's walk is being dedicated to her. We will be there there with the Angels and we know Sarah will be looking down upon us saying, "Good job, guys- I love you!"
