Mark Alan Schroeder, MD

In Memory of Mark Alan Schroeder

Mark was born in San Francisco, CA, and was raised in Evergreen Park, IL and New Providence, NJ. He earned a B.S. degree in Fishery & Wildlife Management in 1985 and a M.S. degree in Packaging, Design & Development in 1989 from Michigan State University.  Following graduate school, he and his family moved to the Richmond, VA area where he worked at Tredegar Film Products as a product manager for nine years.

In 1998 Mark left his job and entered The Medical School of Virginia to become a physician in Family Practice. After completing medical school and a three-year residency, he joined a practice in Chester, VA and began living his dream of being a family doctor.

In September 2007, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Following surgery, he entered the program at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center for continuing treatment. After undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, he was diagnosed in January 2009, with a second brain tumor for which no subsequent treatment was effective. In April of that year, Mark told the doctors at the Brain Tumor Center he wanted quality rather than quantity of life. On May 9, 2009, he peacefully died at home with his family at his side.

Up until 16 days before he died, he continued to see and take care of his patients at the practice while also spending quality time with his wife and three boys. His dedication and love of his family and the opportunity to live his dream of caring for others kept him going throughout his 20-month battle to beat brain cancer. Mark quietly and humbly gave to all who loved and knew him and unbelievable example of how to deal with true adversity. He accepted death with dignity, peace of mind, and a very strong faith in God.

We all love him dearly, miss him terribly every day of our lives, remember his life with smiles and tears, and know he is with us always...he's truly our Angel Among Us!
